NEW TREDEGAR
The New Tredegar area developed due to coal mining, including Eliot's Colliery, which dominated the centre of the valley and whose engine house has been retained and developed as a wonderful museum and archive with its magnificent winding engine still in working order.
The area referred to here in the IWN comprises the distinct but connected communities of New Tredegar, Tirphil, Cwmsyfiog, Phillipstown, and Brithdir.
The combined population is around 5,000.
